Biennial National Conference

April 10-13, 2019

Auraria Campus at Metropolitan State University of Denver
Tivoli Student Union
1068 9th Street Park
Denver, CO 80204

Please join us for this exciting national conference of the Society for Anthropology in Community Colleges at Metropolitan State University of Denver in downtown Denver, Colorado. The conference will be hosted by SACC President Evin Rodkey of Muskegon Community College, Michigan (evin.rodkey@muskegoncc.edu).

Our biennial SACC-fest offers attendees a great opportunity to learn about SACC, network with new friends and contacts, acquire new skills and teaching tips, and enhance awareness of what is happening in other anthropology departments.

The SACC National Conference 2019 will be co-hosted with the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology (HPSfAA), held in conjunction with HPSfAA’s 2019 Spring Conference and featuring some cross-over sessions.  All sessions will take place in downtown Denver at Auraria Campus, part of Metropolitan State University of Denver (and shared with the University of Colorado Denver and Community College of Denver).  The meeting spaces for this event are sponsored with generous support from the Sociology Student Organization at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The conference will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Steve Nash of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (Chair, Department of Anthropology, Curator of Archaeology).

For planning purposes, note a welcome reception with food provided will take place the evening of Wednesday April 10.  Presentation sessions will take place Thursday April 11 and Friday April 12, with lunch provided both days.  A group activity will take place Saturday April 13 with a farewell dinner provided following.  FULL DETAILS COMING SOON!

SLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS

SACC has made arrangements with two establishments, one hotel and one hostel, to provide discounted sleeping accommodations.

Hotel:

A limited number of hotel rooms are designated for a reduced rate at the Hyatt Place Denver Downtown (440 14th St.) for the rate of $169 per night plus taxes.  This is located about half a mile from the conference meeting space.  You must book by Wednesday March 20 (11:59 pm Mountain Daylight Time).

Reserve your room by calling (303) 893-3100 or use this special link to book online:
https://book.passkey.com/event/49876473/owner/14113566/home

If making reservations by phone, please mention you are with the AAA or SACC Meeting. The block of rooms is limited, and rooms might sell out before the deadline. To ensure availability at the group rate, please make your reservations as soon as possible.

Hostel:

Guests may also reserve a bed at a nearby hostel, Hostel Fish (1217 20th St.), about three-quarters of a mile from the conference meeting space.

Testimonial from Evin Rodkey, SACC President: I have stayed here myself, and this is a very nice hostel, probably beyond what you may expect or have experienced, with a lounge and bar.  And as you will note below, SACC guests will be placed together in the same room(s).

The manager and co-owner, Brad Albro, is a personal friend of Evin Rodkey, SACC President, and has offered a reduced rate and shared rooms made up of SACC Conference attendees.  The nightly rate is $40 plus tax, which comes to approximately $45.

The promo code applies from 4/8 – 4/14/2019.  Follow the link below and you should see “SACC” already in the Promo Code field.  Select your days and the room option—but note this will NOT apply to the private and four-person rooms.  Other than those, the room options will not matter; Brad Albro, the manager, will take all registered guests who used the SACC promo code and assign them the same shared room(s).

NOTE: The rooms at Hostel Fish are named by theme, and coincidentally, one of the rooms is called “Anthropology” and you can see “Anthro – 6 Person Mixed” in the room options.  This has nothing to do with our promo code.  It just happens one of their rooms shares a name with the not-so-commonly-encountered name of our discipline!

If you have any further questions or issues with registering, please contact Brad Albro directly at bradhostelfish@gmail.com and be sure to indicate your connection with SACC and Evin Rodkey.  If needed, the hostel’s phone number is (303) 954-0962 and the website is www.hostelfish.com.

Attendees may search for other options in downtown Denver and nearby.  Note our meeting space, 1068 9th Street Park, Denver, is accessible by several lines of the light rail (RTD Rail System).  Also note that if you are considering an airport-area hotel, Denver International Airport is accessible via light rail, but is located about 25 miles away from the conference meeting space downtown; you would need to factor in considerable additional travel time.

About SACC: SACC is a network of people who teach anthropology. A section of the American Anthropological Association (AAA), SACC was founded in 1978 to encourage dialogue, collaboration and excellence in the teaching of anthropology. Visit us on the web at https://sacc.americananthro.org/.
